Chinese Medical Degree Translation for UK GMC and GDC

Chinese medical degree translation for UK registration starts with your regulator’s document checklist: GMC for doctors, GDC for dentists. Translate the Chinese evidence your route asks for, which can include your qualification, clinical training records and professional standing documents; do not treat every certificate as interchangeable. Both regulators require complete English translations with identifiable professional certification, but their copy-certification and submission procedures differ. What do the GMC and GDC rules actually say?

The GMC guidance for international medical graduates requires the source photocopy, a source photocopy stamped and signed by the translation service, and the complete English translation, also stamped and signed. The translator’s contact details must be included. This is more specific than adding a certification page to an English summary.

The GDC’s registration guidance calls for a “certified (signed) translation” of non-English documents and certification. It includes stamps and statements added by whoever certified the photocopy. The English version must be made by a qualified translator, appear on business letterhead, and give the translator’s signature, name and address. Instructions on certifying the source copy come from your particular registration route.

Does an ITI-certified translation meet those requirements?

The GMC names ITI among relevant professional associations when advising applicants how to check a commercial translation service. ITI explains that qualified MITI and FITI translators can use its certification seals. GOV.UK’s general certification guidance also identifies written accuracy confirmation, the date and the translator’s contact details; the CIOL, ITI and ATC guidance supports using qualified professionals. The regulator’s own additional instructions still determine the package.

For a GMC set, I stamp and sign the source copy and its English translation, with my certification and contact details. For GDC work, I provide the translation on my business letterhead with my name, address and signature, including Chinese certification annotations. I follow passport spelling for your name and keep school names, qualification titles, document numbers and seals traceable. A translator’s note identifies a discrepancy rather than silently changing the certificate.

There are separate checks here. Translation certification addresses language and accuracy; certification of a photocopy addresses its correspondence with an original. Which Chinese documents should a doctor check first?

For the GMC international-graduate full-registration route described here, start with these three groups. Other routes can request different evidence, so keep the current application checklist beside your scans.

• Primary medical qualification. The GMC qualification page asks for the qualification certificate used in independent verification. It also asks for the final assessment date, with a university letter if the certificate lacks it. Send your Chinese degree and graduation certificates for identification before deciding which to translate; their English titles should reflect the actual awards.
• Internship or clinical experience. The GMC internship guidance asks for institutional evidence showing rotation dates and specialties. For translation, check whether the hospital’s letter and any attached rotation table form one complete record. I preserve department names and dates rather than reducing them to a general employment statement.
• Certificate of good standing. The GMC standing guidance covers each authority with which you were registered or licensed in the previous five years, including countries where you did not work. Certificates must remain valid when registration is approved; their validity is three months from signing. Ask about the issuing body and timing before translating an old certificate.

A transcript, licence or hospital reference may also be relevant if your checklist requests it. It is not a substitute for the qualification the GMC identifies. What changes for Chinese dentists applying to the GDC?

First distinguish applying to sit the Overseas Registration Examination from applying for registration after passing it. The current GDC ORE application page identifies a certified qualification copy, a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability, character and clinical references, and good-standing evidence where applicable. Its clinical-reference requirement concerns at least 1,600 hours of experience treating patients in the dental chair. Translate Chinese supporting evidence requested for that process, rather than replacing the prescribed reference forms with a translated CV.

Check the English annotations added to each certified copy before sending it for translation. If the certifier wrote in Chinese, that text also needs translating under the GDC’s language guidance. If names differ across documents, the GDC identifies marriage, divorce or statutory-declaration evidence for name changes. Send the actual explanation and supporting paper; a translator should not invent an English name match.

For your ENIC statement, check the UK ENIC Translation Waiver Service: Chinese is covered without an extra waiver charge. That service does not supply an English translation to reuse at the GDC. What should you send, and how do you submit it?

1. Send the regulator and exact route. Include the current checklist or request, readable Chinese scans, passport name spelling, deadline, and any certification already added to the copies.
2. Separate translation from other formalities. Arrange source-copy certification or qualification verification through the route specified by the regulator. Tell me whether the translation will be electronic or needs original stamps and signatures.
3. Confirm the file set. My rate is £30 per page. A short, clear certificate can often be translated within 24 hours; a larger set usually takes 1–2 working days, with lengthy clinical records agreed separately after inspection.
4. Check the finished package. Compare names, certificate numbers, rotation dates, specialties and page order. Flag discrepancies before submission, including a missing Chinese stamp or certification statement.
5. Follow your route’s delivery instructions. The GMC full-registration page instructs applicants to attach PDFs to the appropriate online evidence sections. Its specialist and GP evidence guidance additionally requires hard copies after submission. Keep these procedures separate, and use the GDC instructions for a dental application.
