Where to get a list of certified translators in UK
The UK has two main translation associations, ITI and CIOL, that certify translators and interpreters.
Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL)
How to find a chartered linguist: Go to the website, click “Find a Linguist” on the top menu, and use the filter below.
Pros:
- Certification Assurance: CIOL offers the Diploma in Translation, ensuring translators meet high standards.
- Ethical Standards: Members follow a strict code of conduct for ethical practices.
Cons:
- Limited Listings: Only lists members, excluding qualified non-members.
- No Official Seal: Lacks an official seal, which may be required for some formal documents.
Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI)
How to find a certified translator (MITI): Visit the website, click “Find a professional” on the top menu, and select a translator or interpreter.
Pros:
- Certification and Accreditation: ITI’s membership indicates translators have passed specific assessments.
- Certification Seals: ITI offers seals needed for officially recognized translations. As far as I know, ITI is the only association in UK providing official seals to certify documents.
Cons:
- Membership Restrictions: Only lists members who meet ITI’s strict qualifications.
- Rigorous Membership Process: The detailed qualification process can restrict immediate availability of translators.
