Chinese Documents for a UK Visa: Translation Checklist

Which Chinese documents need translation for a UK visa? Match marriage, hukou, birth, bank and criminal record evidence to your route and prepare the upload.

Chinese documents for a UK visa need translating when you submit them as evidence and they are not in English or Welsh. The documents you need depend on your visa route: a marriage certificate for a spouse application, for example, or Chinese bank statements used to show funds. You do not need to translate every certificate you own. I produce certified Chinese-to-English translations; the checklist below helps you identify the papers to translate and keep them with the right source pages when you submit.

What do the UK visa rules say?

The GOV.UK family visa guidance asks for a certified translation of submitted documents outside English or Welsh. The Skilled Worker document list gives the same language requirement. Neither page is a single shopping list for every Chinese applicant: the evidence depends on the facts of your application.

For visitors, the Home Office supporting-document guide requires a full translation which it can independently check. Its certification details include accuracy confirmation, the translation date, the translator’s name, signature and contact details. That is the standard I use when preparing a visitor’s Chinese evidence, rather than supplying an unsigned English summary.

Does an ITI-certified translation meet that requirement?

GOV.UK’s translation certification guidance specifies written accuracy confirmation, a date and the translator’s name and contact information. The Institute of Translation and Interpreting explains how qualified MITI and FITI translators certify their work with ITI seals. The joint professional guidance published by CIOL recommends qualified translators with a recognised professional affiliation. These sources explain the role of certification; they do not promise a visa decision.

My translation package contains the English text, identifiable source pages, and a signed, dated certification with my contact details and ITI credentials. I use your passport spelling for your name, reproduce document numbers, and describe Chinese seals or unclear entries in translator’s notes. The birth certificate translation service, for example, covers the child’s and parents’ entries rather than extracting only a name and date.

A translation confirms what a document says. It does not prove that a relationship qualifies for a visa or that a particular bank balance meets the financial rules. If your application instructions separately request a notarial document, legalisation or another formality, send those instructions with the scan so I can distinguish that task from translation.

Which Chinese document goes with which visa purpose?

Use this as a selection checklist, then compare it with your application-generated document list. The practical translation checks describe how I prepare a file, rather than additional UKVI rules.

Chinese documentWhen to consider itTranslation check
Marriage certificateEvidence of marriage for a spouse or partner application. GOV.UK lists it as relationship evidence. Both holders’ details, registration date and seals. See the Chinese marriage certificate guide for a UK spouse visa.
Hukou household registerHousehold or family information where relevant to the evidence requested. Treat it as supporting context, rather than a document required for every visa.Identify the household page and relevant members’ pages before commissioning. The hukou guide for a UK spouse visa explains that page-selection question.
Birth certificateParent-child relationship evidence. The Child Student checklist gives a birth certificate as an example.Keep the parents’ names, certificate number and issuing information together; check passport spellings for everyone named.
Bank statementsFunds or income evidence when requested for your route. Family and Skilled Worker guidance give examples; the relevant period and conditions differ.Translate headings, transactions, balances and bank annotations for the selected period. My bank statement translation service keeps the columns traceable.
Criminal record certificateCertain Skilled Worker applications, including specified occupations, can require this. Check the current Skilled Worker list rather than assuming every visa needs one.Translate the certificate you actually obtained, including its issue date and qualifications. See Chinese criminal record certificates for UK visas for the separate eligibility question.
Employment or income letterA visitor may use employer evidence to explain employment and personal circumstances; the visitor guide describes this evidence.Keep the employer’s name, dates, salary currency and signatory’s position legible.
Divorce certificate or judgmentEvidence that a previous marriage ended, where relevant. The family visa information page identifies this situation.Check whether the evidence is a certificate, judgment or mediation document. Translate the supplied document’s operative text and annotations.

A bilingual heading does not tell you whether the rest is translated. Compare the body text, reverse side and stamps before ordering another translation. If an existing English version covers them, send both versions for review so I can identify any actual gap.

How do you prepare and submit the translations?

  1. Start with the visa checklist. Save the list generated by your application and mark which Chinese papers support each item. Resolve questions about evidence selection with your adviser where needed.
  2. Scan the complete selected documents. The Home Office upload guide says the full document must be visible. Include reverse-side text and stamps; avoid cropped edges and glare.
  3. Send the scans, route and deadline. Add the relevant passport name spellings and any specific request. My rate is £30 per page; a short, clear certificate can often be ready within 24 hours, while a larger set usually needs 1–2 working days. I confirm the scope and timing after checking the files.
  4. Review the returned package. Compare names, dates, numbers and page order against the source. Keep the original-language scan with the corresponding certified translation; a simple index is useful when several relatives have similar names.
  5. Use the submission channel your application gives you. The Home Office upload guide distinguishes the ID Check app’s self-upload process from visa-centre or UKVCAS partner uploads. Follow that channel’s file limits and categories, check that the files appear, and retain your submission receipt. A readable translation still needs the right source document and the right application context.
